Art Lessons March 28- April 1

Art 1-

Due end of class Monday for periods 1,2&3 and end of class Tuesday for 6th period

Zentangle Design

*Students will receive a 12×12 piece of tagboard
* they will draw a 6×6 square in the middle of the tagboard
* Next, they divide the area around the square into sections
* In each section they will do different types of zentangles
* They middle they will draw their first or last initial in a decorative script
* Once, everything is drawn then they need to trace over everything with black Sharpie, Their letter can be filled in with black sharpie or the letter left open and color in the background around the letter.
*They will then watercolor the opposite of what they did not color in in sharpie, but only the 6×6 square the zentangle area should remain black and white.

Kaleidoscope Name Drawings

*Divide a square into 8 equal triangles by folding the paper.
*Take a separate triangle and write the name from the top to the bottom
*Turn the name lines into name shapes by going around the outside of the letters and the inside of the letters
*Trace over the name letters with a Sharpie on the front and the back of the triangle
*Place the triangle into one of folded triangles on the paper. Make sure it fits perfectly. Now, put the triangle under the paper and trace the black lines you now see through the paper.
*Now, FLIP the triangle to get a mirror image in the next space. Place the triangle under the paper and repeat these steps 8 times.

Art 2

Silkscreening – Need a t-shirt (light color shirt) No Black or Navy

*Students will design an image for their t-shirt design
*One students have decided what image they want to use for their shirt, they need to draw the design to the exact size and width
*Students will use these designs as a pattern to cut their image out of the film (the film has 2 layers
*Students can cut out the green film it will not attach to the screen.
*Once, students have cut out their image I will melt their image to a screen
*Let dry overnight
*Students will then tape any part of the screen that does not have the green film on it. This will allow the paint to be blocked
*Next, they will choose their color in and print their shirt.
*Let Dry

*Watercolor Unit-

-Students will begin with a watercolor exercises. This will allow them to get familiar with the medium
– Students will divide their paper into 20 squares.
-In each square we will try different techniques in watercolor (salt, sponge, rubber cement, wet into dry, tape, crayon, etc)

Watercolor Fish
-Students will create an underwater scene with different types of tropical fish.
-They will draw their images very lightly on their watercolor paper.
-Students will begin watercoloring their paper using the different techniques we used on our technique chart.
-Students will need to tape their watercolor paper down to a piece of cardboard so that their paper will not curl up.

Art 3 & 4

Clay Pinch Pot Fish

* Students will take their thumb and push a hole into the center of the clay (making sure they do not push through the bottom.) Then, turn the sphere slowly in your hand while pinching at the same time.
* The thumb must be pointing straight down, or the pinch pot will flatten like a plate.
*The pinch pot should be an even thickness. Make sure they have pinched the bottom and that it is not too thick. An uneven pinch pot will feel heavy at the bottom.
*The pinch pot will be the mouth of the fish. Students will then place a plastic bag inside the pinch pot so that it will not cave in.
*Make sure it is wrapped in plastic when finished for the day.
*I will demonstrate how to roll out a coil, and how to slip and score it to the rim of the pinch pot
*Make sure it is even thickness and that it does not look cracked Beginning students have a tendency to overwork the coils.
*Students will the slip and score the coil onto the rim of the fish. This will be the lip of the fish. It also teaches them the coiling method
*Make sure it is wrapped in plastic when finished for the day
*Now the fun really begins. Students will begin adding eyes, teeth, tongue, fins, and whatever they choose to their fish.
*Make sure that they slip and score each pieces well. It will fall off when the pieces begin to dry.

***Will come back in a week to add color to the dry clay

Monochromatic Self Portrait

*Students will take a close up self portrait of their face.

*Then they will upload their image into a program that will change their image into a grey scale.

*We will then print off their image and place a transparency over the top and trace the contours

*They can now grid their transparency and their large sheet of paper

*Next, they will begin drawing

*After all is drawn they will then choose a color to create their image into a monochromatic value scale.  They may choose the color they want to use for their monochromatic scale.

Materials:  clay, clay tools, water, newspaper, screens, printing ink, watercolors, silkscreens, masking tape, rulers, acrylic paint, large drawing paper, black sharpie, tagboard,  drawing paper.

Linoleum Prints

– After they have completed their carving they will apply a small amount of ink on a inking plate and roll over it with a brayer several times to load it with a smooth, even coat of ink.
– Next, they will roll the brayer across the surface of your linoleum, first horizontally and then vertically, to be sure the ink coverage is consistent and all corners and edges are inked.
-Students will then lay a sheet of paper on top of their block and rub gently to get an even print of their image.
-Students should print at least 5 copies of their image. they may choose to print it all in the same color or change colors.

Linoleum Prints

– Students will plan their print by making a pencil sketch on a piece of paper the same as their printing block
– When they have their idea they will shade in the areas that they are not going to carve away.
-Next, students will transfer their image to their block.
-Students will then begin carving the surface with lino cutters. What they carve out will remain white. Remember the final print will be reversed. If using lettering make sure you carve it backwards.
– Once you carve something out it can not be put back
– After they have completed their carving they will apply a small amount of ink on a inking plate and roll over it with a brayer several times to load it with a smooth, even coat of ink.

Watch Youtube videos to decide what pour technique you want to use.

You need a 16×20 canvas and choose 5 colors of acrylic (you need 2 bottles of each color)

We will work step by step and only a few at a time to pour each day.

Color Scheme Painting

*Students will draw an animal on a 18×24 Sheet of paper
*Students may grid their image and then their paper if they choose too. The animal must fill the page or enlarge the animal and only include part of the animal
*They will then divide their images into 4 equal parts
*They will then paint each section with a different color scheme. Example: monochromatic, complementary, triad and warm

ABSTRACT DESIGN
*Divide your 12×12 paper(tagboard) into 4 equal sections

  • Next, you may choose to do a abstract face or a abstract design
  • If you are doing a n abstract face you should have all features of the face and some maybe a profile of a face and some maybe the front view.
  • If you are doing the abstract design.  You should have at least 3 geometric shapes one shape that has a hole in it, a curvy line that weaves through it (top to bottom), draw 6 lines (vertical, diagonal, horizontal)  Do not include your division line as one of the lines
  • Paint each square the color combination
  • #1 Value Scale (black, white and grays)
  • #2 Monochromatic of 1 color
  • #3 Analogous color scheme
  • #4 Complementary color set (choose one set example violet and yellow)
